Adventurous Birthdays at Expedition Island (CLOSED)

Expedition Island is closed.
My kids and I have been wanting to visit Expedition Island, the exciting indoor adventure play space up in Petaluma. We recently had the chance to check it out when my five-year-old daughter was invited to a birthday party there. I wasn't sure if my daughter was too young for the daring activities offered there—like zip lines, rope swings, a climbing wall, and a wobble bridge, but she and all of her friends couldn't get enough!
When partygoers arrive, they're fitted for safety harnesses and informed of the house rules, and are then ushered into the large, warehouse-like space of the Island, which is decorated in a tropical motif. Here they're free to play and have fun.
Kids climb the stairs to the upper level, where helpful attendants guide them through the activities they want to participate in, and make sure that everyone has a good safe time. If a zip line stops mid-trip, helpers down below make sure everyone gets to the other side. After our play session on the Island, we headed to a private party room for pizza and cake.
All the children in our party were really excited and couldn't wait to try out all the different activities at Expedition Island. In fact, everyone wanted to come back and try it again. Fortunately, Expedition Island offers open play sessions by reservation on weekends and some weekdays or on Wednesdays from 2 to 5 pm and Fridays from 4 to 7 pm, so you don't have to wait for a birthday party to go back and play. On Wednesdays and Fridays, if you reserve a spot for one youth explorer, you'll get second for free.
Open play prices for 90-minute sessions are $20 per person for one or two people, $17 per person for three to nine, and $15 per person for groups of 10 or more. Non-participants and children under 4 are admitted free. Expedition Island seems like it would make a great outing for school, scout, and play groups, too.
Birthday party prices range from $150 to $269, and include 90 minutes on the island, as well as options like time in a private party room, food, drinks, and the services of an on-site party host. See their website for prices and details.
