Create a Unique Father's Day Gift at Studio 4 Art

June 12, 2009

hand prints in paintFather's Day is nearly here! We asked Kebby McInroy, Marin mom and owner of Novato's Studio 4 Art, for some ideas for unique handmade gifts for Dad. Studio 4 Art offers drop-in art making sessions, art classes, summer camps, and more. Look for their booth at this weekend's (June 13 and 14) Novato Festival of Art, Wine and Music.

As Father’s Day quickly approaches, it’s time to think about that “something special” to give that special dad. Studio 4 Art has many last minute handmade options available to you. These are all created in the studio with instructors that are there to assist you along the way.

mosaic frameScreen-printing, mono printing, and relief prints are a great way to experiment with paint and design, and children as young as 2 can create a print.  These prints can be used on t-shirts and recyclable bags, or on fine paper to be framed and hung on a wall.

Another popular gift item is a mosaic mirror or flower/herb pot. We have tiles, handmade pieces, old china, stones, marble, and other items to incorporate into a fun and decorative piece. You can also bring in broken dishes, rocks or other memorabilia creating your own “time capsule”. This is best for children 4 and older.

painting on canvasFor a more traditional fine art piece, try a painting created on a 8 x 10” canvas.  Whether it is abstract, realism, expressionism or cubism, Dad is sure to be surprised with the finished work. When framed, the children’s work looks not only amazing, but like a true piece of art! Recommended for children 2+.

Studio 4 Art also uses a cone 5 clay that can be made into many forms. If you can dream it, we can help you make it. Some ideas are: business card holders, coffee mugs, ice-cream bowls, wall plaques, or a vase for flowers. We have wheels for throwing (for creating round objects like bowls and mugs), a slab builder for creating large sheets of flat clay (good for platters, tiles, and plaques), tools, glazes, and kilns to fire your finished piece.

potter's wheelFor those of you that have new babies, footprints and handprints are still a favorite and fun way to remember how small they once were. We can capture the size of your baby’s hands or feet on fine paper, canvas, or in clay.

Studio 4 Art is open Monday through Friday, and is located in downtown Novato at 1133 Grant Avenue. Because of our summer camp schedule our new “drop-in” summer hours are from 2–6 pm daily. For more information, visit www.studio4art.net or call (415) 596-5546.
