Ahhh… Date Night, the elusive moments in time when parents can actually enjoy their dinner or (gasp!) take in a movie or a concert or show. In the busy blur of life it is important for partners not to sweep this under the bed with the dust bunnies, Barbie shoes and dinosaurs. It should be a regular event because as adults, we need to have some alone time during which the conversation doesn’t revolve around after-school schedules, Dora, or LEGOs.
As much as we love our sticky, dirty little adventurers, there is something to be said about wearing a nice outfit for at least two hours without finding it to be covered in peanut butter or glue or Play-Doh. There is also something to be said about reconnecting with your spouse or partner, reminding each other why the two of you decided to take the family journey together. Marin is full of great restaurants, theater and musical venues so don’t hesitate a day longer, call the sitter and make Date Night happen this weekend!
Have a fabulous dinner at Boca Steak Restaurant, the Argentinian steak house and head to Novato Theater Company where the summer show lineup includes Broadway favorite Spring Awakening. Check out website for times and prices. If pub grub, beer and a movie sounds good, head to Moylan's Brewery and Restaurant for dinner and then walk across the street to the Century Theatres for a movie that doesn’t include singing princesses, talking animals or inter-changeable aliens.
San Rafael is the county seat and the most diverse city in Marin. There are numerous choices for eating out, including Italian fave, Il Davide Restaurant, one of San Rafael’s best kept secrets Le Chalet Basque, for amazing menu options, or Lotus Cuisine of India, the Pacific Sun hall-of-famer, Zagat-rated restaurant for some of the best Indian food around. Walk down 4th Street and enjoy the lights, stop for ice cream at Double Rainbow Cafe before heading to George's Nightclub for a night of dancing. Check out the indie flicks at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center or grab tickets to any of the great concerts and shows at the Marin Center. Music lovers will enjoy the newest musical venue, Terrapin Crossroads which promises to have a fantastic lineup all summer.
Fairfax is a hotbed of music and fun. Although 19 Broadway draws a younger crowd, this bar/club draws a diverse group of musical acts almost every night of the week. San Anselmo might be a little quiet after 9 pm but be sure to have dinner at Marinitas, where the margaritas will have you and your partner feeling just fine. The Left Bank in Larkspur is a classic favorite for a romantic night out and Boca Pizzeria is the new hot spot in Corte Madera.
Mill Valley has always had a killer nightlife and after a couple of years of re-orgs, this little hamlet is back on the map! With choices from the newly reopened Sweetwater Music Hall to 142 Throckmorton Theatre, Marin Theatre Company and the Mill Valley Masonic there is no lack of excitement, music and culture. One might find local musical or comedy greats such as Sammy Hagar, Robin Williams, Dana Carvey or even Bonnie Raitt stopping by for the night. Great food doesn’t take a backseat in Mill Valley, home to the the Buckeye Roadhouse, one of Marin’s best and most popular foodie destinations and hot-local-chef Tyler Florence’s El Paseo, which has both the critics and the diners raving. Are you and your mate into beer? Be sure to check out Mill Valley Beerworks, where several rare and interesting beer are available by bottle.
Sausalito may be a very popular tourist destination but that’s no reason to avoid the wonderful restaurants and the gorgeous scenery. If Italian doesn’t sound good, skip Poggio and head to the other spot recently opened by local restaurant pioneer Larry Mindel, Copita Tequileria y Comida, offering nearly 30 tequilas. Why not try one of their signature drinks and head for a night walk along the water? Sausalito can’t be beat for romance. That being said, parents who want to really splash out and make a weekend of it should head straight for Cavallo Point at Fort Baker. Gorgeous views of the city, wonderful amenities and a Michelin rated restaurant, it’s a perfect weekend to get away... but not too far!
