School's back in session, but that doesn't mean you can't get out and have fun with the kiddos, especially when that fun is for free! Our September weather is always so beautiful, so events and activities taking place outdoors are a must this month. Here are our picks for a dozen fantastic free family activities, events, and outings in Marin and beyond for the month of September.

  • Explore the big trees without the tourist crowds at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve in Guerneville.
    Daily from 8 am to dusk
  • Sing and Dance with Miss Kitty, one of Marin's favorite family entertainers, on the lawn at the downtown San Rafael Library!

  • Make and marvel at amazing seaside sand creations at the 35th Annual Sand Sculpture Contest at Drakes Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore.

  • Learn about creepy-crawlies with Marin Parks naturalists at Nature for Kids: Spiders at Lake Lagunitas in Fairfax.

  • Rock out to original kindie rock by Seattle's the Not-Its! at Mill Valley Library's Sunday Special.

  • Gather around the campfire at the historic Sonoma Barracks for s'mores and a talk by a park interpretive specialist.
