November 1, 2013

Marin on Ice Marin on Ice, Marin County's only holiday ice skating rink, returns to Northgate in San Rafael for a second season of open-air skating, opening Saturday, November 9, 2013 and running through January 12, 2014. The rink will be open daily from 11 am to 9 pm, including holidays. This year the rink is even bigger, with 5,600 square feet of real ice.

The Marin on Ice rink will be located in the same spot as last year, in Northgate's Oaktree Plaza near Kohl's.

Special sessions at Marin on Ice include "Family Night" on Tuesdays and "Rock the Rink" on Friday evenings. Skating costs $15 per person, which includes skate rental, and "Skate Buddies" (the blue plastic chair-like supports) are available to rent for beginnners. Skates are available in sizes from a child's 9 to an adult 13.

Marin on Ice will also offer birthday parties during public skating hours. The cost is $300 for up to 10 skaters, and two-hour parties include a private ice cabana, skate rental for everyone, a table and chairs, a special birthday announcment on Rink Radio, and a ride for the birthday boy or girl on the rink's mini zamboni during ice resurfacing. The rink's three ice cabanas can be combined so parties can be for 10, 20, or 30 people. Private rink rentals are also available for your group, organization, or business.

NOT family friendly!

I recently took my five-year old there with his friends and their parents after school and had a terrible experience as a result of very rude owner and staff. There is only one price which is $15/day + $5 for a "push walker/skate buddy" for beginners. If you want to skate with your child, it's another $15 for you. There is no hourly or half-day rate. I had my 3-year old with me who wanted to try, so I put him on skates and within 5 minutes he was crying and wanting off the ice. I took the skates back to return them thinking they would be understanding since we were only on the ice for 5 minutes. They would not give a refund, were very rude and would not allow me to give my ticket to someone else. The owner/manager, in particular was very nasty. Needless to say, we won't be back. Too expensive, not a great place for beginners, and a very unwelcoming, hostile staff.
