Parents Place in San Rafael has been a valuable resource for countless Marin County parents and families. They offer a wide variety of programs and classes for parents and children throughout the year. Here are a few of the classes they are offering for the month of May.

The “Whole Brain Child” Approach to Parenting: Based on the work of Daniel Siegel, MD and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD.

(All ages) Wednesday, May 2, 7–9 pm
Learn key strategies to deal with everyday parenting struggles and how to nurture your child’s developing mind. By applying new scientific discoveries to everyday parenting, parents can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate their child’s brain. This interactive workshop teaches parents how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that children can lead balanced and connected lives. You will learn ways to foster healthy brain development, leading to calmer, happier children. Discussion will focus on the “left and right brain” and the “upstairs brain” which makes decisions and balances emotions and is developing throughout childhood. With Therese Connolly, LCSW.

Siblings Without Rivalry

(3 – 10 years) Sun., May 6, 10 am–4:30 pm
“I had it first!” “David hit me!” “Tyler’s copying me!” “Katie won’t give me a turn!” Are you getting worn down by your children’s fighting and complaining, comparisons and competition, or other child-like behavior? Do you try to avoid using threats, bribes or a raised voice, but find yourself using them anyway, just to survive the day? Would you like to learn practical and effective methods that will make life with children easier and more satisfying? In this lively, interactive workshop you will learn effective strategies you can implement immediately to reduce sibling rivalry and conflict, improve communication, and enhance your relationships at home. Girl Power!

(10 – 14 years) Mon., May 7, 7–9 pm
For parents of tween/early teen girls (10–14 years), this workshop focuses on the joys and challenges of raising daughters in our fast-paced, plugged-in world. Come build your awareness about the stressors faced by pre-teen girls, including body issues, friendships, bullying, and increasing academic pressures. Identify and cultivate your daughters' strengths, such as creativity, leadership, athletics, or activism. The workshop will give you practical tools to partner with your tween in creating greater independence and responsibility, while fostering trusting and clear communication with parents. K/1 Girl & Grown-Up Workshop: Tools for Sunny & Cloudy Day—4 Sessions

(K/1 girls and their grown-up) Tuesdays, May 15–June 5, 5:30–6:30 pm
Girls Leadership’s Girl & Grown-up Workshop Sunny & Cloudy Days With Friends provides an opportunity for girls (kindergarten and first grade) and their significant role models to build a foundation of common language around advocating for themselves and understanding true friendship behaviors. Each workshop is 60 minutes.

ONLINE Workshop: Building Your Child's Self-Esteem and Personal Power

(Elementary/Middle School) Thursday, May 17, 1–2 pm

Feisty Threes and Fours

(3 – 5 years) Thursday, May 10, 7–9 pm
Learn why these are the “feisty” years and how to enhance cooperative behavior and turn feisty into fun” Tips, resources, and discussion about teaching self-discipline, control, socialization skills, and more – while still allowing our children to be children. Infant and Child CPR

(For expectant parents, parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children up to onset of puberty) Sunday, May 20, 10 am–12:30 pm
Learn to recognize an infant or child in distress, rescue measures for choking, CPR techniques, and infant sleep safety. Includes hands-on practice with mannequins. One-year certification provided. Pre-crawling babies welcome. With Shanda Manion, CPR instructor certified by the American Heart Association in basic life support.

Power of Positive Parenting—Triple P Workshop

(Birth–11 years) Thursday, May 24, 7–9 pm
Children of all ages need a safe, secure, and loving environment to do well. Positive parenting is an effective approach to raising children that emphasizes the positive. It involves creating a family environment that is loving, supportive, and predictable. This is important in raising healthy, well-adjusted children who have the skills and confidence they need to succeed at school and in their relationships with others.

Positive parenting reduces the stress of parenting and makes parenting more rewarding and enjoyable.
