Celebrate Earth Day 2008

Earth Day is this Tuesday, April 22nd, and this being the Bay Area there are numerous events from now through Tuesday. I think it’s important to talk to your kids about Earth Day and the reason why we celebrate it. There are many cool Earth Day activities for this coming weekend. I tried to list the ones that were more family oriented events. Many of the events listed below will educate families about earth-friendly practices that you and your family can do at home.

 

Some of the Earth Day events for this Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday: 

Friday, April 18

  • Crissy Field Center. Bring the kids (ages 2–5) to “Let’s Recycle", this Friday from 10 am to noon at the Crissy Field Center. Help conserve our planet’s natural resources by recycling what we use. Read The Dumpster Diver, and then engage in a fun interactive outdoor game of Recycling Rangers. Return to the Gathering Room to make an art project out of recycled materials or make a mini-recycling bin to take home! Saturday, April 19 

  • Blackie's Pasture- Bring your whole family for a morning of restoration and clean-up on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the shores of Blackie's Pasture at Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary for an Earth Day Work Day.  Please call for more details on workday projects.   • Bay Area Discovery Museum- Celebrate Earth Day at the Bay Area Discovery Museum and renew our commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner world for all of us with a variety of special activities that will connect your family to the wonders of our natural world. Saturday, April 19 10 am–5 pm Free with Museum admission! Join Rebecca Burgess, master weaver and ecological steward, for a native plant walk (11 am–noon) and a paper-making project (2–4 pm). Then take a Bay walk with senior science guide Eli Africa (3 pm). www.badm.org
  • Berkeley Earth Day will be take place on Saturday, April 19 from 12:00 pm-5:00pm at the Civic Center Park between MLK and Allston. Come out and bring the family to this educational event and learn what you can do to help save the planet. There will be a The Berkeley Farmer’s Market, entertainment, food, crafts and much more.   • Corte Madera- Earth Day Work Day will be on Saturday, starting at 9:30 am. Meet at the College of Marin Ecology Study Area. Park on McAllister, walk to the end of Stadium Way and turn left along the bike path to the site. Wear boots and gloves, to weed and tend new plants. Call Charlie at 457-1147 for information.
  • Crissy Field- Earth Stroll, An Earth Day extravaganza for the whole family will be taking place at Crissy Field from 11 am to 3 pm. Bring the whole family on an interactive fitness walk around Crissy Field guided by your very own Eco-Passport. Play eco-games, visit with live animals and make strides for a healthy planet and a healthy you at the many activity stations designed to help you connect with this little corner of the planet.   • Mill Valley- Join in for Mrs. T's Mill Valley  Beautification Day from 9:00 am to noon. Walk out your front door and do a litter brigade around your neighborhood!  Or adopt a favorite park and clean it up!  When you are done, grab your trash and come to the Plaza at noon for a Celebration & Prizes!  For more info, go to their website or contact Linn Walsh at lwalsh@cityofmillvalley.org or call 388-4033.
  • Samuel P. Taylor State Park- The Marin Conservation Corps and state park officials will host an Earth Day celebration from 8 am to 3 pm on April 19 at Samuel P. Taylor State Park. Officials are looking for volunteers for the event. The day will begin with trail work and park restoration until noon, then finish with music, food and fun things to do for the children.   • San Rafael- Bring the family to Spring Beautification Day at Earth Day in San Rafael on Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. It's a multi-lingual celebration and community cleanup event that will be taking place at the Pickelweed Park and Community Center.  This park and shoreline cleanup will be followed by family activities, including Aztec dancers, prizes, Chinese lion dancers, puppet shows, a bicycle treasure hunt for children and 20 educational booths and activities focusing on the environment.   • Ross- Bring the family to Phoenix Lake from 9:00 am to noon to help restore habitat for native western pond turtles by removing French broom from the shoreline. The Marin Municipal Water District will be hosting this event. If you are interested, you will need to meet at the Natalie Coffin Greene Park parking lot at the end of Lagunitas Road in Ross at 8:45 am.  Call the water district volunteer line for more info at 945-1169, or visit www.marinwater.org.
     

Sunday, April 20

  • San Francisco Zoo- Bring the family to celebrate Earth Day-Party for the Planet at the San Francisco Zoo on Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Help celebrate the earth and participate in fun animal awareness activities. A number of other green and earth-friendly organizations will be on hand with interactive displays so everyone can learn more about being a responsible eco-citizen. Tuesday, April 22

  • The Village Corte Madera- Bring the family to the Earth Day Concert Event at the Village at Corte Madera on Tuesday, April 22 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. They will be having an interactive Green Show' with Lori & RJ Cotton Candy Express Music in Center Court. The multi-award winning Lori & RJ are experts with family entertainment. With nearly 20 years of live performing and delighting families; they are also very concerned for the planet.   • Habitot Children's Museum- Bring your children to come and help decorate their Giant Earth sculpture using a unique assortment of recycled materials at Earth Day at the Habitot in Berkeley. Make a statement about saving the environment while using trash to make art on Tuesday, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The Habitot Children’s Museum is located at 2065 Kettredge Street in Berkeley.
