I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Organic Ice Cream!

May 9, 2007

ice creamNow that the weather is warming up, it’s time to think about… ice cream! I’ve been wanting to try Three Twins, an ice cream shop in Terra Linda serving organic, earth-friendly ice cream, so the recent hot weather was my excuse to go try it out. Three Twins Ice Cream is located in Terra Linda off Del Ganado Road in the same shopping center as Scotty’s Market. When we first pulled up, my kids immediately noticed the little kids’ tables and chairs arranged out front for seating. In fact, they seemed only interested in the furniture until I reminded them about the ice cream.

Three Twins produces their organic ice cream in-house, as well as organic homemade waffle cones and waffle bowls. Organic milk and cream are from Straus Family Creamery in West Marin, and flavors and ingredients change seasonally, with about 120 selections in all. Flavors include favorites like Madagascar vanilla, strawberry (which is supposed to be fantastic), and cookie jar, as well as more unusual offerings like cardamom, rose, and orange. Spoons and bowls are biodegradable, being made of corn.

There’s another organic ice cream parlor in Marin, Fairfax Scoop on Broadway in, not surprisingly, Fairfax. We haven’t tried it yet but will fill you in when we do. Apparently their lavender honey ice cream is to die for, and they offer a kids’ cone for a measly buck and a half; it’s perfect for little kids as well as adults who just want a small amount. Word is they usually also have a soy flavor available, too.

Let us know if you have any other favorites by leaving a comment. I know that Pizzeria Picco in Larkspur serves Straus Creamery organic soft-serve ice cream, but it’s not strictly an ice cream store. The do offer their vanilla soft-serve topped with extra-virgin olive oil and sea salt, which isn’t something you run across every day.

Fairfax Scoop

The Fairfax scoop is incredible! But beware of long, long lines. You cannot beat the $1.50 kids cone, that is usually the one I get. The strawberry is to die for, better than Haagen-Dazs in my book. (and that is saying a lot!)

Powell's Sweet Shoppe

I don't know if it's organic, but Powell's Sweet Shoppe on Grant in Novato has an awesome selection of delicious gelato (for $2.99--the small size--you get two HUGE scoops and you can mix flavors). There are tables out front where you can sit and enjoy it. Of course the candy store itself is a child's paradise...and pretty irresistible to parents too!

This Just In...

Silbermann's in Northgate One has introduced two flavors (vanilla and chocolate) with all organic ingredients:

Three Twins ice cream

I just wanted to add that Three Twins serves a mini scoop. It is a bit bigger than a golf ball, and is $1.75. Their single scoop is $2.75 and their double $4.40, and if anyone orders a triple that will set you back $5.70.
Happy sugar rush to you!
