[We thought we'd bump up this article for the holidays, since it's relevant.] When shopping for toys, I like the many one-of-a-kind toy stores we have here in Marin. There are a variety of alternatives to Toys-R-Us and Target; locally owned, unique shops where you can find those interesting birthday, Christmas or “just because” gifts.
One of these unique toy stores that I recently discovered is called Dollhouses, Trains and More. Located in Ignacio, this 12,000 sq ft. toy store is not only a kid’s paradise, but also a hobby shop for adults. If you have never been there before, you will be amazed and fascinated by all the collectables, like the Lemax Village Collections which includes, Christmas, Halloween, and Carnival pieces that are displayed in full motion. If you are into dollhouses, then this is the place for you. They have over 400 dollhouses in stock that range from a basic to unthinkably elaborate. They also carry all the dollhouse gadgets known to humankind. Their model train collection is quite extensive too. Even if you don’t live in Novato, it’s worth the trip to this incredible place. My kids love going there, as well as the bag of popcorn offered on the way out. More information: www.dollhouses-trains-more.com.
Another fun and unique toy store that I really like is A Child’s Delight, with locations both in Corte Madera’s Town Center and in San Rafael at Northgate Mall. We usually stop in the Corte Madera store while we are at the Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays. My kids love to go in to this store to play with their train table and to look at all their interesting toys. They have a wonderful selection of high-quality toys, dress-up outfits, cars and trucks, and puppet theatres to choose from. More info: www.achildsdelight.com.
Lastly, another favorite is Five Little Monkeys, toy store in downtown Novato on Grant Avenue that opened about a year ago. This family-owned store has a playful and friendly atmosphere from the moment you walk through the door. They have a great selection of toys, so the kids always find something they want to buy. Besides toys, they have an excellent book collection that includes a variety of childhood favorites. They carry a great selection of bath toy sets, dress-up clothing, games, art project kits, and learning and discovery toys. My son recently picked out a birthday gift for a friend and they wrapped it at no charge, which made the process quick and easy. Downtown Novato businesses will be open until 8 pm on the following Fridays: December 7, 14, and 21. There will be free horse-drawn carriage rides provided by Indian Valley Carriage Rides, and sponsored by the Downtown Novato Business Association. More info: www.5littlemonkeys.com
