Explore Windrush Farm for Family Fun

April 3, 2017

Windrush Farm

This weekend we had the chance to take a tour of Windrush Farm outside Petaluma. This working farm, sited on 25 rolling acres of green fields, is home to a both variety of animals, including sheep, goats, alpacas, and chickens, and some fantastic family programs, like music classes, summer camps, and more. It's a beautiful place, especially on a sparkling clear and warm spring day. It's an amazing educational resource that feels like it's a world away but is only a 20-minute drive from Novato.

We met up with Arann Harris, who organizes the educational programs on the farm, which his mother, writer Mimi Luebbermann, founded over 20 years ago. Arann, a musician and former naturalist at Walker Creek Ranch, showed us around the farm and introduced us to the farm's animals, including some adorable lambs and baby goats.

The gates open at 10 am for a meet-and-greet with the sheep, a spinning demonstration, milking the goat, and finding tadpoles in the pond. Make sure you bring a picnic to enjoy at the pond, too! The Marin Symphony Presents Orch'apalooza this Sunday, January 29

January 24, 2017

Midori at the Marin Symphony Marin Mommies presents a sponsored shout-out from the Marin Symphony.

As a child prodigy, Midori traveled the world, making her legendary debut at age 11 with the New York Philharmonic. Now a mature artist who has continued to develop her art, Midori inspires audiences around the globe. This season the Marin Symphony and our Youth Orchestra have been selected for her prestigious Orchestra Residency Program Award.

Midori and all three of the Marin Symphony Youth ensembles will perform in the grand finale of her residency in a program called Orch'apalooza! In what is sure to be an energetic final number, all three of our youth ensembles (160 musicians ages 8–18) will join forces to perform the rousing "Toreador March" from Bizet's Carmen. The performance is followed by Cookie'palooza (free cookies for all attendees in the Redwood Foyer).

We all know the importance of music in our children's development.  Take advantage of this family-friendly entry into the world of classical music.

Winter Music Classes for Kids in Marin

January 1, 2017

Music ClassMy kids have always really loved music, and I think that's due in part to taking music classes like these starting when they were really little. We tried a few different classes around Marin and the North Bay, and really like the Kindermusik programs offered here in Novato by Music with Melissa. Regardless of which program you choose, there is a music class for every child from newborn to grade school.

If you’re thinking of getting your child involved in a music class, then now’s the time to sign up. Many classes will resume their sessions in January. Here’s an updated list we’ve put together of a variety of local music programs and classes. If we’ve left out your favorite class then please let us know, or, better yet, leave a comment and tell everyone why you and your kids love it!
