In our second in a series of interviews with Bay Area children's musicians, we talk to singer and instrumentalist Betsy Stern, who's jazz- and world-influenced music for children and families can be heard at live venues throughout the area, such as Novato's Playtime Safari, and in her new CD Foyo. In fact, we're giving away a free copy of Foyo, courtesy of Betsy Stern, to one lucky visitor to this site. Annual Student Concert

The Marin Music Chest presents its free annual concert featuring student musicians honored with this year’s award scholarships. It will take place at San Domenico School in the Hall of the Arts Music Pavilion on Sunday, May 4 at 2:30 pm. The concert will feature classical solo performances on piano, violin, cello, and harp by each of the 13 Marin Music Chest scholarship winners. A reception will follow the concert. The Marin Music Chest was established in 1933. After more than forty years of presenting concerts, the Marin Music Chest made the annual scholarship program its primary mission, providing financial support to promising Marin County students of classical music. The Music Music Chest celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year.

Bring the whole family to this sweet and wondrous opera, The Little Prince. Cal Performances and San Francisco Opera team up to bring you a beloved classic of children's literature May 2- May 11, 2008. Sung in English, this fable by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is about a pilot who crash-lands in the desert and meets an open hearted boy from another planet. This opera offers a valuable lesson for the family: a gentle reminder to hold on to what is truly important in life.

Bring the kids (ages 2–5) to Fantastic Fridays: Let’s Go Fly a Kite, this Friday from 10 am to noon, and explore all things that fly from birds to planes to kites. The highlight of the program will be making and flying your own kite. Parents and tots will get the chance to make their own jumping frog. Drop-ins accepted on a space-available basis. Bring the family to Tam's 100th Homecoming Sock Hop Dance on Friday from 7:00–10:00 pm at Tamalpais High School. There will be a sock hop in Gus Gym, and dance lessons if needed. There will be hot dogs, refreshments and popcorn. Kids 13 & under free, students 14 and up $5, adults $10. Tam High is located at 700 Miller Avenue in Mill Valley. Marin Symphony Family Concert

Once again, the Marin Symphony Family Concert will be taking place on Sunday, September 30 at 3:00 pm in the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium at Marin Center in San Rafael. The theme of this family-friendly concert is “Heroes and Villains”. The Marin Symphony’s Family Concerts are special one-hour programs designed to introduce children to the wonders of symphonic music. Narrated by KDFC radio’s Hoyt Smith, the concert features John Williams’ “Superman March”, Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory, “The Queen of the Night Aria” from Mozart’s Magic Flute, and other pieces by Grieg, Holst, Stravinsky, Rossini and Handel.read more »

Marin Theatre Company presents two Summer Theatre Camp productions: Oliver! and Chateau La Roach. All shows will be performed at Tam High's Caldwell Theatre at 700 Miller Avenue in Mill Valley. All ages will enjoy the musical Oliver! (Aug 2–Aug 5) performed by the MTC Youth Camp, and the comedy (with a bit of music) Chateau La Roach (Aug 9–Aug 12) performed by MTC’s Teen Camp. Tickets are very affordable at adults/seniors $15, students/children $10. You can purchase tickets online at www.marintheatre.org.
