Volunteer and More in Marin on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Day Celebration at the Bay Area Discovery MuseumThis coming Monday, January 19, 2015, is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. While you could just enjoy the day off from work and school, why not make it a day of service to your community? Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and and make it a "day on" not "day off" to help make our community a better place for everyone.

Here are MLK Day volunteer opportunities for families on Monday in Marin County.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Marin County Civic Center
10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael
Monday, 9 am–noon
Come work together on MLK Day to spruce up landscaped areas at the Marin County Civic Center. All skill levels are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. All ages are welcome; anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult. Dress in layers you can get dirty, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water. Muir Beach Stewardship

Muir Beach, Golden Gate National Recreation Area
Monday, 1–4 pm
Improve vital habitat for the coho salmon and other wildlife through planting and weeding projects on MLK Day. Volunteers of all ages are welcome at this family friendly event. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15. Registration required, register online here.

Stinson Beach Cleanup

Marin City March, Celebration, and Volunteer Project

101 Donahue Street, Marin City
9 am–3:30 pm
Join hundreds of marchers en route from St. Andrew Presbyterian Church to the Manzanita Recreation Center. Lead chants, sing songs, and keep Dr. King’s dream alive! Afterward, participate in a volunteer project in the Mattie and Clarence Boatman Community Garden and Orchard. More information

MLK Day Celebration

Bay Area Discovery Museum
557 McReynolds Road, Sausalito
9 am–5 pm
Even if your little ones are too young to lend a hand at a volunteering event, they can come to the Bay Area Discovery Museum to learn about Dr. King's live and work. Join in a special project in the Art Studio, and enjoy an uplifting performance by E. W. Wainwright and the African Roots of Jazz (separate ticket purchase required). Storytime will focus on the values Dr. King advocated. Free with museum admission. More information
