Pet-loving kids can get a hands-on experience with a variety of animals with Marin Humane's 2023 Humane Summer Camps. These popular camps at the Marin Humane campus in Novato teach children important skills in animal handling, care, and welfare. My animal-loving middle-school-age daughter has participated in this camp and she had a fantastic time.

These camps have limited space and are extremely popular. Registration takes place online and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a camp session is full it will be closed.

Online registration will go live on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at noon PST.

Scholarships are available for low-income families. Sessions begin June 12 and run through August 4 (no camp during the week of July 4).

Campers entering 1st through 8th grade in fall 2020 will experience a wide variety of animal-related activities. Camps are divided into age groups:

  • 1st and 2nd Grade: Animal-themed arts, crafts, games, and daily visits from Marin Humane's Animal Ambassadors.
  • 3rd and 4th Grade: An introduction to basic animal care plus animal-themed arts, crafts, games, an opportunity to learn and practice the basics of dog training, and daily visits from Animal Ambassadors.
  • 5th and 6th Grade: An introduction to advanced animal care plus animal-themed arts, crafts, games, daily visits from Animal Ambassadors, and an opportunity to learn and practice the basics of dog training.
  • 7th and 8th Grade: Teens will experience the daily work of an animal shelter. They will learn about animal related careers, animal care and behavior, and animal welfare. Daily hands-on experience with shelter and volunteers’ animals.

Students entering grades 9 to 12 can apply to be Teen Camp Assistants (TCAs) and earn community service credits by helping young campers with games and projects and assisting camp staff.

Marin Humane is located at 171 Bel Marin Keys Boulevard in Novato. For complete information about these programs, visit www.marinhumane.org.
