California Academy of Sciences’ Nature Day (and community free day for select SF neighborhoods)

Sunday Sept. 30, 10 am — 4 pm

Come play and learn about nature and science at the California Academy of Sciences on Sept. 30! The Academy hosting its first-ever Nature Day, a daylong family-friendly festival with plenty of fun activities to entertain kids of all ages. Nature Day involves popular Bay Area museum partners, such as the Bay Area Discovery Museum, Oakland Zoo and the Marine Mammal Center — which will collectively feature a range of science and nature activities, including mural paintings, nature play, den building, bubble play and a puppet theater and more!  

Nature Day, held in the museum’s East Garden, is free with general museum admission. Plus as part of its neighborhood free weekend program, residents of select SF neighborhoods get free museum admission to the Academy on that day. Find out if your neighborhood is part of community free days on Sept. 30. (proof of residency is required). 

What you will find at Nature Day: 

Bubble Play 

Children’s Puppet Theater 

Create With Nature - use natural materials to build things (great for younger kids)

Den Building - use burlap, bamboo, and palm fronds to make dens (great for older kids)

Host-plant Hoopla 

Insect Investigation - discover insects around the garden

Learn How to Be an Ocean Hero - hosted by The Marine Mammal Center

Nature Mural Painting - paint on canvas

Nature Play - hosted by SF Children in Nature

Pollinators Rock! - LIVE BEES in a hive

The Scoop on Poop - hosted by Bay Area Discovery Museum

Track and Skull Match Up - hosted by Oakland Zoo

Water Painting Station - paint on slate, wipe away with water
