Ghirardelli Square Tree Lighting

All across Marin and the Bay Area, communities celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with a traditional tree lighting ceremony. This year, some are offered online and some have been restructured to conform to social distancing protocols; many have been canceled altogether. Here's our list of Christmas tree and Hanukkah menorah lighting ceremonies and celebrations in Marin County, San Francisco, and Sonoma County. We'll be adding more events as the holidays near, so check back often!

Lighting of the Historic Sonoma Plaza

Downtown Sonoma
Thursday, November 26 (Thanksgiving Day), 6 pm

It's a Sonoma Lighting of the Plaza for 2020 — bright lights, great performances, all from the comfort of your own home! Join online andcelebrate the holidays in Sonoma Valley with performances from Ballet Folklórico Quetzalén, Sonoma Conservatory of Dance, Valley of the Moon Music Festival, Transcendence Theatre Company, and more. Mill Valley Winterfest

Depot Plaza, Downtown Mill Valley

In lieu of the traditional Winterfest activities, the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce will present a COVID- and family-friendly event that will be will be both virtual and dispersed. The festivities kick off Friday, November 27 with the Winterfest Holiday Hunt, a three-week, scavenger hunt-style contest at more than 40 businesses throughout Mill Valley. The contest centers around Silver Stars, which business owners will place in storefront windows or inside their businesses. Kids, accompanied by a parent, will take photos of silver stars (as selfies in front of the stars they choose) in at least eight participating businesses, including amazing local restaurants and retail shops. The Holiday Hunt runs through Friday, December 18. Event details

Winter Wonderland Holiday Market & Christmas Tree Stroll

Ghirardelli Square, San Francisco
Friday, November 27, noon–6 pm

Join Ghirardelli Square for a festive Holiday Market presented by Fog City Flea and a self-guided Christmas Tree Stroll with trees decorated by the talented students at the Academy of Art. Linger in the square until sundown to catch the holiday lights for the first time this season! Event details

Downtown Winter Lights

Downtown Santa Rosa

Winter Lights, Santa Rosa's annual tree lighting event, has been transformed from a single-day event to an ongoing on taking place from the day after Thanksgiving through New Years Day. Enjoy favorite Winter Lights elements, including  activities for the family, photo opportunities, entertainment, holidays specials from downtown restaurants, and great shopping opportunities, plus new activities like a Winter Wonderland and Holiday Maker Market.All Event details

Novato's Annual Community Tree Lighting Goes Virtual

Saturday, December 5, 5–6:30 pm
Novato’s favorite annual holiday tradition has been re-imagined allowing for a new experience! Novato’s Annual Community Tree Lighting will be held virtually on Novato Community Television Channel 26 (Comcast) and livestreamed through NCTV’s YouTube channel. Tune in for a program of pre-recorded entertainment and watch live as the tree lights are flipped on from the comfort of your own home! Support Novato’s local eateries by ordering take-out or delivery to enjoy while watching the festivities. Don’t forget about Santa! The fun continues from 6:30–8pm, as Santa makes his way through the neighborhoods of Novato spreading cheer to one and all. Event details

Tree Lighting Festival

Cavallo Point, Sausalito
Sunday, December 6, 5:45–8 pm

Kick off the holiday season with complimentary fun for families and adults. Enjoy socially distant carriage rides, photos with Santa, holiday shopping with local artisans, live caroling from local students, and hot cocoa and sweet treats for the kids. The evening culminates with the ceremonial lighting of a giant holiday tree, to officially mark the beginning of the season's festivities. Advance tickets required. Event details

Bill Graham Menorah Lighting

Union Square, San Francisco

The Bill Graham Menorah lights up San Francisco's Union Square for its 45 year, with lighting ceremonies starting December 10 at 5 pm. The first ceremony features special guests and local dignitaries (TBA), and long-time Bill Graham colleagues. Location: 333 Post Street, San Francisco. Event details
