Stapleton Ballet's Sleeping Beauty

Over one-hundred Youth Company dancers will present the story ballet, Sleeping Beauty, featuring lavish sets and costumes. The story of Sleeping Beauty is commonly associated with the Disney animated film, released in 1959. But this ballet has a much richer history. Tchaikovsky was commissioned to write a score for the story in 1888 by Ivan Vsevolozhsky. The ballet scenario that Tchaikovsky worked on was based on the Brothers Grimm version of Perrault's work entitled 'Dornröschen'. However, Vsevolozhsky incorporated some of Perrault's characters from other stories into the ballet, such as Puss in Boots and Little Red Riding Hood. Sleeping Beauty premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1890. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa. The work is widely regarded as Tchaikovsky's finest ballet score, and has become one of the classical repertoire's most famous ballets. We are pleased to present this abridged version of Sleeping Beauty, with a duration of one-hour.

Also being performed are excerpts from Balanchine's© Who Cares, with music by George Gershwin. Former George Balanchine* dancer and Dance Educator, Wilhelmina Frankfurt is working in collaboration with The Stapleton Ballet and with the permission of The George Balanchine© Trust on an Educational Study .The presentation does not represent a "Staging" of the ballet excerpts.
