Mini Golf in Marin at McInnis Park

June 17, 2014

mini golf at McInnis Park in San RafaelI'd driven by McInnis Park off Smith Ranch Road in San Rafael many times before I realized that—hidden amongst the driving range, nine-hole golf course, clubhouse, and batting cages—there was a miniature golf course there too (it was the a little windmill and castle on the hill that tipped me off). Since then, it's been a favorite place for us to go with the kids for a fun day out.

McInnis Park's miniature golf course is a colorful, 18-hole, artist-designed course with fanciful features including an elephant with moving feet, a snail, a castle, a lighthouse, a waterfall, and a much more. The tiered, lushly landscaped course winds its way up a hill as you play and the views from the top are spectacular.

The course also offers two bonus holes at the end. Keep your ball after the 18th hole, then go down below to the bonus course that includes a dinosaur, which is always a favorite with my kids.

Handling Parental Anger (all ages)

We're only human! Parenting young children is a joy. It is also one of the hardest jobs you'll ever do. Frustration and exhaustion are common, and anger cannot be avoided. We all lose our tempers occasionally, but learning to take care of our own feelings first is crucial before dealing with a child's behavior. During this workshop, gather information from the workshop leader and talk to other parents in similar circumstances. Devise a plan to deal with your anger so that it doesn't overtake you or harm your child or family life. Understand how and when your buttons are pushed and find constructive ways to express yourself. With Susan Byrd, LCSW. Monday, June 9, 6:30–8:30 pm. $40. Register here.

Sailing into San Rafael’s Community: A Mother Daughter Story!

April 21, 2014

Sailing Education AdventuresMarin Mommies presents a guest article by Marin mom Barbara McVeigh

After 30 years, Sailing Education Adventures, one of Marin’s best kept secrets, sails into new territory. Just over a year ago, the nonprofit moved its adult program from Sausalito to San Rafael’s Loch Lomond Marina, just down the Canal from its hallmark Summer Youth Camp at Marin Yacht Club. The organization has positioned itself well to serve the North Bay sailing community. New programs are building to support family, adult and teen sailing year round. Last year the community came together to support youth sailing for kids of the Canal District, a program that will continue because of a generous grant from the State of California.

This year, new program director Meghan Hartnett takes the helm. She just moved back to Marin after living in New York for nine years. Her mother, Jane Piereth, founded the organization and Meghan grew up sailing, as well as leading the summer camp 13 years ago. “It’s like coming home,” she says.

Preschool Profile: Gan Israel Preschool in San Rafael

January 27, 2014

Gan Israel PreschoolEstablished in 1989, Gan Israel is a licensed preschool facility that has been directed by Gittel Rice Goodman since 1990. During these many years the preschool has changed and evolved into a Jewish community preschool serving all children and families regardless of their faith or religious affiliation, focusing on school readiness skills, Jewish holidays, and the important human values of kindness, caring and respect for one another and for the world we live in. Learn more about the school and its programs at www.ganisraelsanrafael.com

Please describe your school's educational philosophy. What’s it all about?

Gan Israel is an independent, inclusive, Jewish community preschool that focuses on respecting and valuing each individual child and their family. Our student to teacher ratio and our group size is low to ensure each child receives personalized and caring attention.  In addition to school-readiness skills, we focus on teaching and modeling human values such as: kindness, caring and respect. We focus on teaching children how to respect the world they live in. Nature and Tikkun Olam (“repairing the world”) are underlying themes in all we teach.  At Gan Israel we celebrate Jewish holidays in a very joyous and hands-on way; geared to young children and with consideration of the many different ways that people celebrate Judaism. Our teachers are a warm and dedicated group of early childhood educators. The teacher’s role is to encourage each child to explore and discover new ideas and to help the child strive to reach his or her full potential.
