How Does Our Garden Grow? Part II: Sprouts

Vegetables sprouting in containersI know with this weather it's kind of difficult to think about a summer garden, but ours is moving forward. It is the first day of spring after all, although it doesn't seem like it, does it?

It's been a little over a week since we sowed our heirloom tomato and pepper seeds that we got at the Petaluma Seed Bank. They've been sitting in their egg cartons on the window sill, not doing much of anything during most of that time. The kids were impatient (big surprise) and wondered why they weren't germinating, but I wasn't worried, since it's been pretty cold, still.

But earlier this week, there they were—little tomato plants sprouting up all over! The peppers didn't show any signs of doing anything, still, but I noticed this morning that there was one little red Marconi plant starting to sprout. Woohoo! We'll probably have to thin them out and do a transplant when they get a little bigger. We can't wait until the weather starts getting warmer.

I forgot to mention last time that we sowed some carrot and radish seeds out in the garden. They should both do pretty well in cooler weather, and radishes are the closest thing to instant gratification you're going to get in a vegetable garden, since they'll be ready to harvest in three to four weeks.
