Rainy Day Holiday Fun: Easy Playdough Snowmen

Playdough snowmanKids love sculpting with Play-Doh, and it's easy to make at home for a fun rainy day activity. You probably have all of the ingredients sitting in your pantry right now!

We whipped up a batch of white "snow-dough" to make some cute holiday snowman decorations. It was an easy and fun craft for the kids to make. This recipe makes quite a bit of dough—equivalent to two large cans of Play-Doh. If you don't need that much, feel free to cut recipe in half.

To make your own snow-dough, you'll need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Silver glitter (about 1 tablespoon)
  • wax or parchment paper

Mix together the dry ingredients in a large saucepan (non-stick is easiest). Then add water, oil, and silver glitter.

Cook over medium heat until the dough pulls away from the pan. Remove playdough from pan, and place on piece of wax or parchment paper. Leave it alone until it's cool enough to handle, then knead it for a few minutes until it's smooth and elastic. That's it! It helps to let the dough sit for a fifteen minutes or so before using.

Store any leftover dough in a sealed container or zip-lock bag.

To make our snowmen we used buttons, ribbon, small sticks, googly eyes, and orange pipe cleaners. You can vary this depending on what you have on hand. Let the kids roll snow-dough into balls in three different sizes, then stack them and decorate as they like. Use your imagination! Try making a snow family and snow animals, too.
