Capoeira Performance and Annual Graduation Ceremony

The ceremony will take place on June 11, from 3:00-5:30pm at the Corte Madera Community Center.
The Batizado (Portuguese for baptism) is a traditional capoeira graduation ceremony. It is an inspiring event featuring Capoeira at its best along with music, rhythm, dance and a lot of emotion. All new students will receive a capoeira nickname and play a special game of capoeira with a high-ranking capoeirista, symbolically welcoming them into the ABADÁ capoeira community. New students will also will receive a colored cord that represents their skill and experience level, some continuing students will move up the next cord level and receive a new cord. This event is a meaningful event in the life of both student and teacher as they each reflect on the commitment they have made to the art of capoeira and new goals to achieve. The event will close with a dazzling roda featuring special guest artists with superb capoeira skills.
We are honored to announce that our guest of honor: MESTRANDO PIRIQUITO VERDE!
Prior to the Batizado, Mestrando Piriquito Verde will lead a series of workshops to help local and visiting students hone their skills while interacting with the larger ABADÁ-Capoeira Community.
JORGE LUIZ DE FREITAS (“Piriquito-Verde”) was awarded the title of Mestrando in 2011. He is an internationally-renowned university professor and author credited with creating and developing many of the core pedagogical techniques employed around the world by capoeira instructors, particularly with respect to children’s instruction.
