Home & Away: Art & Education Workshop!

This event is expired.

July 10, 17 & 24, 2:30-5:00 pm all dates

Friends of Peralta Hacienda Historical Park and artist and writer Linda Norton will host an art and education workshop as part of Home & Away: Oakland, California's Prisons, and the Geography of the Heart, an exhibit that documents the effects of mass incarceration on Fruitvale's community in Oakland.

California has one of the largest prison systems in the world. Across the U. S., almost two million people are currently locked up. More than 70 percent of the imprisoned population are people of color. Approximately five million people - including those on probation and parole - are directly under the surveillance of the criminal justice system. Three decades ago, the imprisoned population was approximately one-eighth its current size.

What does the rise in incarceration do to our communities and families? How can we document the local impact of "The New Jim Crow," and communicate and heal?

Through field trips, interviews, an exhibit, and art workshops and education, Home & Away: Oakland, California's Prisons, and the Geography of the Heart explores the connections between those who remain in the neighborhood and those who are "away," behind bars.

Fruitvale's community members and museum visitors are invited to three workshops with artist and writer Linda Norton at the Peralta Hacienda on Fridays July 10, 17, and 24th, from 2:30-5:00. Visitors of all ages are welcome to come and talk about these issues, see the exhibit, read from our library of books about incarceration and freedom, listen to music, and make art to take home or to add to the exhibit. Writers and poets are welcome to visit and make new work to read aloud or to add to the walls of the show. Supplies and refreshments, and some instruction and guidance, will be provided.

Home & Away: Oakland, California's Prisons, and the Geography of the Heart is made possible by the generous support of the Creative Work Fund.
