On June 5, 2016 from 2:30-4:30pm ABADÁ-Capoeira Marin will be holding its very first Batizado ceremony and performance at the Corte Madera Community Center.
Capoeira is a unique martial art that incorporates music and rhythm with an acrobatic series of movements. It originated in Brazil during the 16th century as captive slaves from Africa invented a way of disguising their self-defense training in what appeared to be a musical dance. Capoeira is the world’s fastest-growing martial art.
The Graduation Ceremony (or “batizado”) is an inspiring event in which new students re- ceive a capoeira nickname and are “baptized" by playing a special game of capoeira with a high-ranking player.
New students will receive a capoeira nickname and play a special game of capoeira with a high-ranking capoeirista, symbolically welcoming them into the ABADÁ capoeira community. New and continuing students will receive a colored cord that represents their skill and experience level. This ceremony is a meaningful event in the life of both student and teacher as they each reflect on the commitment they have made to the art of capoeira and new goals to achieve.
Our event will close with a dazzling performance by several international luminaries of capoeira, some of whom will be traveling from Brazil and Europe to participate. This non-profit event feature capoeira at its best and cultural performances full of music, dance, beauty and emotion.
It is our great honor to announce that the featured guest for our First Batizado will be Mestra Márcia Cigarra. She is a renowned Capoeira Master who has won many awards for her contributions to capoeira and the local community.
Delicious brazilian dinner will be served by Brazil Marin on site after the graduation ($10)
