Catapulting into the Middle Ages

This event is expired.

Marin Horizon Middle School presents Catapulting into the Middle Ages.

The Physical Science unit Catapulting into the Middle Ages focuses on building and testing machines that convert potential energy into mechanical energy. Students rediscover Newton’s laws of motion, the universal law of gravitation and other concepts that form the foundation of modern physics. They then put the scientific method into action as they explore the effect of different variables on the distance and accuracy of their projectiles. Data collection, graphing, science writing, metric fluency and the “habits of a scientific mind” were built into each lab.
The unit began with the Marshmallow Siege, which involved designing prototypes that allow students to explore the variables that affect how far a projectile will launch, such as length of launch arms, number and size of rubber bands, how far back you pull the launch arms, etc. This was followed by a guided inquiry lab called Angle Adventure. Here, students hone in on a truly key variable, the angle of launch. Using the classic scientific method, they determine the effect of the independent variable, the angle of launch, on the dependent variable, the distance of travel.

Additional labs exploring potential and kinetic energy, balanced and unbalanced forces and inertia have prepared our students for the design and construction process of The Pumpkin Launchers! While launching marshmallows is fun, the pumpkin launch is a school-wide event!

Working in groups, students have designed and built a machine that can launch a pumpkin at least 10 meters. We use multiple intelligences theory to form the collaborative groups. Students were frequently asked to reflect not only on the design and construction, but also on their collaborative skills as they are as much a part of the lesson as the science. Collaboration among students, as well as students and teachers, is a fundamental piece of educational philosophy at Marin Horizon. That said, on November 17th, the longest launch in each grade earns lunch on the town!

At the end of the day, the pumpkin launch is a fun yet challenging vehicle that incorporates math, science and the study of the Middle Ages in Humanities class, as well as a broader essential question: what drives technology? It also focuses on creativity, an essential skill for learning, as students are constantly asked to come up with not just one solution, but five to ten in the hope that one will work.

Please note this is a school-wide shuttle event. Park at the Mt. Tam Methodist Church and take the shuttle to the presentation. Please RSVP by email if you plan on attending this unique educational experience!
