March 9, 11am and 2pm

On Saturday, March 9, the Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton presents live on stage the literary classic 'Alice in Wonderland,' transformed into a musical adaptation using actors, life-sized (and bigger!) puppets and a digitally projected, Live Virtual Set (TM).

DLux Puppets is the innovative professional theater company that mixes actors, life-sized puppets, and a new "virtual" set platform. The Alice in Wonderland puppets are created from scratch, from design through construction and finishing, in the DLUX shop and studio. They range from 2 to 7 feet tall, with some taking as long as 200 hours to build.

Co-founded by Beach Blanket Babylon's Derek Lux and his partner elementary teacher Lauren Lux, the company has both high artistic excellence and strong ties to SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and STEM (Science Tech Engineering and Math).

But the founders note "this is not your typical 60-minute re-telling of a beloved classic."

The production aims to offer and demonstrate strategies for how children and their grown-ups can empower themselves in their lives, told through the lens of the fantasy-rich, familiar tale.  Lauren says: "The show is based on positive psychology and teaches children the power of their words, thoughts and feelings. Children will learn tools that have a more positive mindset."

While the show is unique, Lux admits to a certain "Sesame Street flair," having always been a huge Jim Henson and Muppets fan. "What I really love about him is how much of an innovator he was. That is something I very much want to emulate in my own way."

2 shows: 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Reserved seat tickets: $6-18.

Presented by City of Pleasanton Firehouse Arts Center.
