SAN FRANCISCO - The Village Project will present its 10th annual Kwanzaa celebration throughout San Francisco, with seven days of community events starting on Dec. 26th, running through January 1st. Striving to unite and strengthen our family, community and nation, we will again highlight each of the seven principles of Kwanzaa (the Nguzo Saba).
There will be 15 free celebrations in 7 different neighborhoods. Four new partners have been added to this year's schedule, Glide Memorial Church, The Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco, King/Garvey Housing Development and the Success Center, San Francisco. Each hosting organization will present exciting and enriching cultural programs, intended to both entertain and engage the entire family.
A spiritual ceremony - pouring of libations and honoring of ancestors will start each program and will be followed by a feast, live entertainment and the lighting of one of the seven candles of the Kinara. The soulful performance of blues singer Tia Carroll will headline this year's myriad of entertainers, along with the dance department of Laney College. Storytellers, Phavia Kujichagualia and Kirk Waller will share African Folklore at the main San Francisco Library and at Glide Memorial Church, respectively.
The seven day celebration will open at the Museum of the African Diaspora at Noon on Friday, December 26th, and continue with an evening celebration at the African American Arts and Culture complex 7at pm, lighting our first candle, Umoja (unity). The closing celebration will take place at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church on Friday, Jan.1st, 6 pm, with Tia Carroll crooning some down home blues and the lighting of the last candle, Imani (faith).
