SAN FRANCISCO - This year's 9th annual Kwanzaa celebration promises to be the best yet! The Village Project will launch San Francisco's city- wide Kwanzaa celebrations on Dec. 26th, running through January 1st. Highlighting the seven principles of Kwanzaa (the Nguzo Saba), there will be 15 free events taking place over seven days throughout San Francisco, in 6 different neighborhoods. We are welcoming new partners this year, The Addition, The Museum of the African Diaspora and Rafiki Wellness Center, along with two new sponsors, The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation and Lennar Urban. We are also celebrating the return of Marcus Books. Each celebration begins with a spiritual ceremony, followed by a feast, live entertainment and a lighting of one of the seven candles of the Kinara. This year's myriad of performers will include rhythm & blues bands such as the Soul Mechanix and the legendary Fillmore Slim. Dee Spencer and The Blues Ryders Band and will bring jazz and blues to the Addition on Dec. 31st. The seven day celebration will open at San Francisco's City Hall at noon on Friday, December 26th, followed by a celebration of the reopening of MOAD at 2 pm, ending with the candle lighting ceremony and feast at Westbay Conference center, 7:00 pm. The closing celebration will take place at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church on Thursday, Jan.1st, 6 pm, with a night of gospel and blues performed by Emma Jean Foster.
