"Let's Get the Rhythm" Hand Clapping Documentary Film
This event is expired.
“Let’s Get the Rhythm” The film is a documentary which invites the viewer to explore the history of hand-clapping games on playgrounds around the world. Through wars and migrations, across language barriers and oceans, young girls connect with each other through thousands of variants—ancient as they are global—the film chronicles these rhythmic and recreational practices. Irene Chagall is a San Francisco-based music teacher who discovered a passionate interest in girls' hand-clapping games during a trip she took to Ghana. She took her research to the Smithsonian Institute's Center for Folk life and Cultural Heritage and became a Smithsonian Research Fellow.

Debuting in January 2011 in celebration of the Library's centennial year, the ongoing "After Hours" series presents different narratives, ideas and presentations that an audience might otherwise not consider or experience. After Hours is for adults and high school students. The Library's Main Reading Room is transformed into a beautiful venue for After Hours events. Programs typically last 90 minutes (includes Q&A). After Hours features a wine reception before and after our program. Patrons enjoy the intimate atmosphere and ability to meet the filmmaker.
