Love in Every Stitch: Stories of Knitting and Healing
Barnes & Noble Corte Madera will host Lee Gant, renowned master knitter, pattern designer, and author of Love in Every Stitch: Stories of Knitting and Healing, for a book talk and signing on Friday, June 19, 11am-1pm.
About Lee Gant: A renowned designer and sought-after teacher, Lee Gant is a household name among knitting enthusiasts. Holding the rank of 'master knitter,' Lee enjoys working with adults and children, as young as age eight, teaching self-empowerment through knitting. Some of Lee's designs can be found in 60 Quick Baby Knits, in Knit Picks and Patternfish online, and at Strings and Things in Kauai. Lee's knitting has won many first place and best-in-show awards at county fairs in northern California. Her new pattern collection for children's knitwear will publish in the spring of 2016. She lives in Santa Rosa, CA.
About Love in Every Stitch: You might see them in the airport, at the dentist office, or sitting next to you on the bus, their hands rhythmically looping string over needles, growing a blanket or sweater, socks or mittens. What you don’t see is how those two sticks and yarn make them feel. Content. Relaxed. Free of worry. Unaware of the passage of time. Nor can you see the story behind the knitting. If you ask, you might hear how the hat growing from a pair of needles will soon warm the head of a cancer patient fearful of losing her dignity along with her hair. You might learn how knitting saved someone from relapsing into a life filled with drugs and alcohol or how the craft eased an agoraphobic out of the house. Certainly you would be surprised to know that knitting helped someone transition through the stages of going blind. Some of the stories will sound like miracles, and perhaps they are.
In her inspiring book, Love in Every Stitch: Stories of Knitting and Healing, master knitter, teacher and widely published knitwear designer Lee Gant shares real life stories about the power of knitting. This completely original story of the power of craft to reclaim explores how knitting fosters self-esteem, hope and healing. Readers will learn how a few simple tools can bring about the magic of creation. Indeed, knitting can trigger tremendous change in one’s life or even – as in Lee Gant’s case – save it. The transformations and triumphs of all who have made their journey while holding two sticks and a skein of yarn inspires, amuses and even brings a tear or two.
As an employee of three different yarn stores, a teacher of countless knitting classes, and a volunteer teacher of at-risk youth, Lee has had the opportunity to gather stories that naturally result when a group of people sit at a table together and make something with their hands. Loops of Love, a collection of these stories, will be divided into eight parts, each part consisting of three chapters. The first part, Change, sets the tone for the remainder of the book by showing how knitting can change the course of one’s life. The remaining parts of the book – Overcoming, Grieving, Mending, Giving, Discovering, Living and Ending – explore the ways people change for the better, always with knitting as key to the transformation. During her twenty-year knitting career, Lee discovered that knitting allows us to overcome grief and mend our minds; and that in giving of ourselves, we change our perspective and in the end live better lives.
The stories Lee shares about herself and fellow knitters from around the world illustrate how each stitch and purl comfort and calm, heal and renew. A suicidal teenager crochets through pregnancy. A dying woman finds comfort in the company of knitters. A woman finds the courage to face her estranged parents. A woman going blind realizes she can still knit – and experience life. And Lee’s life, riddled with more than just anxiety, has at last become stable and productive. Loops of Love will include stories of women, men and teens who have experienced profound change and enlightenment through knitting and crochet.
