San Francisco Festival of the Mandolins

On April 23rd the Croatian American Cultural Center hosts the San Francisco Festival of the Mandolins. For the past 17 years there has been a sit down concert in the afternoon, workshops in the late morning, good food & drink, and plenty of chances to listen to the best, and most diverse mandolin music in the world. The 1PM concert, will be preceded by workshops at 11AM. Performers include; Aurora Mandolin Orchestra, Grupo Falso Baiano, Chris Acquavella, Crying Uncle & Friends (Teo Quale), Billy Packard Trio, Tom Rozum & Group. And the added treat of Bulgarian food by Chef Hristo Kolev.
Chris Acquavella is a classical mandolinist & educator from San Diego, California, Chris performs across Europe and America both in a solo and chamber music capacity. Aside from chamber music, he concertizes as a soloist & orchestral musician with various orchestras & ensembles throughout the world.
Grupo Falso Baiano is a choro group that offers a window into the history and diverse culture of Brazil. Choro is one of Brazil's earliest popular musics, dating back to the late 1800s, and, similar to jazz, it reflects the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure closely resembling Baroque Classical music.
Originally from New England, Tom Rozum moved to Berkeley from Arizona, where he played many kinds of traditional and original music with Summerdog and Flying South; and then to San Diego, where he honed his swing chops with the Rhythm Rascals. He joined forces with Laurie Lewis in 1986 as part of the original Grant Street Band,
(Matteo) Teo Quale, age 10, is a mandolinist and fiddler from Alameda, CA who has been delighting audiences with his inventive mandolin playing as part of The Barefoot Quales.
Aurora Mandolin Orchestra (AMO), the largest orchestra of its kind, under the musical direction of Josephine Pellegrini, will perform for the 17th consecutive year at the "SF Festival of the Mandolins".
