Reading Research Study! Stanford University and Lindamood-Bell

Lindamood-Bell is collaborating with Stanford University to help them further their research into successful reading practices.

The study is being conducted at the Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Imaging by Dr. Brian Wandell and Jason Yeatman.
Participants meeting criteria will receive substantially discounted one-to-one instruction at a Lindamood-Bell Learning Center.

CRITERIA FOR INVOLVEMENT IN THE STUDY
Participants must be eight or nine years old and must meet study-specific parameters for reading and comprehension as determined by standardized tests. A free screening will be administered for potential participants at a Lindamood-Bell Learning Center.
Participants must meet health and medical requirements to receive MRI scans and be able to remain still for several minutes at a time.
Participants must attend instruction for four hours per day, five days per week for a recommended number of weeks. Recommendations are derived from test results. Once enrolled, the participants will receive discounted instruction. However, less than 80% attendance in any two-week period will disqualify a participant. If disqualified, further instruction will be offered on a fee-for-service basis.
Participants must provide their own transportation to Stanford University for four separate scanning sessions. Each session will be approximately two hours, and would be scheduled during, at the half-way point, immediately after, and one year after instruction.

RISK AND BENEFITS
There are no known risks associated with exposure to high strength magnetic fields for individuals who have been screened for MRI incompatibility (e.g., for presence of metal implants and devices).
While no guarantees are made with respect to skill improvement, all participants receive valuable reading instruction that has been shown to be effective for many students.
This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Stanford. Parent(s) or guardian(s) will be asked to sign a form consenting to the child’s participation in the study, and the child will be asked to give his/her assent. All information will be confidential and available only to primary parties carrying out the study.
