Weight problems and memory problems are an effect of lack of sleep

Bad health has a connection to lack of sleep, according to 2 new studies. One study shows that lack of sleep contributes to being overweight. This effect is especially strong in children. Lack of rest may also substantially impair memory function.

Link between sleep and obesity

Researchers studied the rest habits of 300 kids, ages 4 to 10 years old. There was a link between weight problems and the children who did not sleep regularly. This was not necessarily kids who got too little sleep, however children that slept more or less on various days of the week. The lead researcher on the study commented on these results. He said, "We think that the direction of the arrow is you sleep less, you eat more, you exercise less because you're tired, and therefore you gain more weight."

How sleep and memory connect together

Nature Neuroscience today is a journal. Another sleep study was published in it. There was a discovery that subjects who took naps right after studying would retain 25 percent more information than other subjects. This is what German scientists discovered. One theory is that memories are “downloaded” during rest to be put within the long-term part of the brain after being put within the short-term part originally. Memories become stronger in sleep. That is the basic idea.

Why it's hard to get sufficient rest

For many individuals young and old, getting enough sleep is difficult. For school-aged children and adolescents, nine hrs or more per night is usually recommended. Adults are really only designed to get between 8 and 10 hrs. This is considered “enough” by most. In general, getting sufficient sleep ought to mean resting until you naturally wake up. It seems to actually help for you to “catch up” on your sleep though. Catching up on rest over the weekend can help reduce risk of weight problems between 280 percent and 400 percent.
