Create a Cute Butterfly Card for Your Valentine

It's always fun to make your own unique Valentine's Day cards to give to friends and classmates. This butterfly-shaped card holds either a candy stick or a pencil (especially handy when your child has a classroom that discourages distributing candy), and above all is easy to make and decorate.
My daughter cut out the butterfly shape with kid-safe scissors, and decorated the card with foam stickers. Of course you could embellish yours with whatever you like: crayons, markers, paint, or whatever you happen to have in your crafts bin.
For this project you'll need:
- Colored card stock or heavy construction paper
- Scissors
- Old-fashioned candy sticks (keep the wrapper on) or colorful pencils
- Pipe cleaners
- Valentine themed stickers
- Crayons, markers, paint, glitter glue, etc.
Instructions:
- Download the butterfly template here.
- Print the template onto the card stock and have your child cut it out with kid-friendly scissors.
- Cut the slots (dashed lines) for the butterfly's candy-stick or pencil body.
- Open the wings and weave the candy stick or pencil down into one slit and up through the other.
- To make the antennae, wind the pipe cleaner tightly around one end of the candy stick so that two equal lengths extend upward and then curl the ends.
- Finally, decorate your butterfly with stickers, crayons, markers, or glitter glue and write your message on the back.
This is a fun activity for you and your kids to do together. My daughter was really proud of her cards — each one was unique.
