Developing a Positive Math Mindset

Marin Mommies presents a sponsored article from San Domenico School.

At San Domenico School, helping our youngest students develop a growth mindset around math is an important focus. Beginning with the first days of the school year, we devote time and focus to help develop a “positive math mindset” from the very start. We’ve noticed that it pays off down the road as we see our students persevere through more challenging math concepts with confidence, excitement, and a sense of purpose.

In developing a positive math mindset, we focus on the following messages:

  • There is no such thing as a math person! (or a non-math person…)

  • Mistakes are valuable!

  • Speed is not important!

  • Believe in yourself!

This intentional process sets students up for success and invites them to be active participants in their own learning. We want all of our students to feel capable and excited to learn math, and to know that making mistakes is a normal part of the learning process.

Here’s a sneak peek into our K-8 Math process:

  • Develop a solid foundation through a balance of exploration and fundamental skills

  • Communicate math questions and ideas effectively

  • Make connections within math, and between math and other subjects

  • Provide differentiated instruction that meets individual needs, so we all succeed
