Free Drive-In Movies in Marin!

Do you remember going to the drive-in movies when you were a kid? There was still at least one drive-in movie theater in San Rafael back when I was young and I have fond memories of going there in the family station wagon dressed in my PJs to catch the latest Disney flick on the big outdoor screen. The last drive-in here closed back in the '80s, but you can re-live that experience with free drive-in movies in Marin this summer!

Drive-In Movies at Bon Air Center, Greenbrae

Bon Air Center and the Lark Theatre have teamed up to present a free, summer drive-in movie series for the whole family. Sing along to toe-tapping, '80s summer dance classics including Footloose, Dirty Dancing and Flashdance. Box dinners will be available for purchase from Bon Air’s popular restaurants. Instead of hanging a speaker from your window, you hear the movie audio by tuning into an FM radio station or through your car's Bluetooth. Social distancing requirements will be followed and masks are required when anyone is outside their personal vehicle.

Movies take place on Thursday nights this summer: June 18, Footloose; July 16, Dirty Dancing; August 20, Flashdance. Gates open at 7:30 pm and all cars must be parked by 8:30 pm. Space is limited, so advance tickets are required; reserve yours online at larktheater.net. Tickets are free, but donations to the Lark Theater, a fantastic Marin non-profit performing arts and cinema resource, are highly encouraged. Only one ticket is required per car. Swing by the Lark before the show to pick up a bucket of their freshly popped organic popcorn!

Bon Air Center is located in Greenbrae on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, right off Highway 101. Get more info at bonair.com.

North Bay Mobile Drive-In, Novato

Since 2010, North Bay Mobile Drive-In has been delighting Marin families with free "flash mob" style drive-in movie experiences. Relive the classic drive-in experience at the old Hamilton Theater in Novato. Movies are projected on the side of the theater building, which makes a perfect movie screen, and you can tune in to the movie audio on your FM radio at 88.3. COVID-19 social distancing rules are in place: wear a face covering when you're outside of your car and stay at least six feet away from other groups of people.

This summer's lineup includes Beverly Hills Cop, on Friday, June 26 and Close Encounters of the Third Kind on Saturday, July 11. Check their Meetup page for additional movie and venue announcements this summer. You can also make donations North Bay Mobile Drive-In to help keep the movie magic going! The Hamilton Theater is on Palm Drive in the Hamilton Area of Novato. Learn more at www.meetup.com/North-Bay-Mobile-Drive-In.
