Hands-on Fun for Fall at Slide Ranch

Slide Ranch is a great place for family members of all ages. We tried out one of their family farm days in the past and my kids had a great time petting the sheep planting seeds, milking a goat, and making nature crafts. They offer guided tours and lots of hands-on activities, including collecting eggs from chickens, planting seeds, sampling from their organic garden, learning to make crafts and food just like the early farmers, and exploring the nearby tide pools.

Slide Ranch is located off of Shoreline Highway in Muir Beach. Below is a list of their upcoming fall events. Registration for fall is not yet open, so watch their website for updates. You'll want to register as soon as possible, as their programs usually sell out way in advance. Slide Ranch members get early access to registration, so consider joining. Fall Family Farm Days

Family Farm Days at Slide Ranch are relaxed four-hour programs that feature a wide range of activities related to the day's theme.

  • Ocean Appreciation & Coastal Clean Up Family Farm Day
    Saturday, September 21, 9:30 am–1 pm
Honor the waterways and ocean by taking part in the 35th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Slide Ranch is one of over a thousand sites, both inland and coastal, that are hosting an organized cleanup to steward our environment and resist the scourge of marine pollution. Team up with Slide Ranch to clean up the coast and protect the ocean. The day will also include ocean-inspired art projects, goat milking, visiting the chickens, ducks and turkeys and an ocean-garden cooking project. Please bring a picnic lunch and work gloves, if you have them.
  • Bird Exploration Family Farm Day
    Saturday, October 5, 9:30 am–1 pm
In this special Family farm Day, explore what makes a bird a bird and the different types of birds that live at Slide Ranch including domesticated chickens, ducks, and turkeys, plus wild owls, quail, hawks, hummingbirds, turkey vultures and marine birds such as pelicans and oystercatchers. Fall is bird migration season and we will observe hawks and other raptors traveling south. Practice bird watching and awareness of bird language, care for birds on the farm, make bird-themed arts and crafts, and cook with eggs from the farm to connect with our winged friends!
  • Give Thanks for Food Family Farm Day
    Saturday, November 16, 10 am–2 pm

Celebrate the glory and gift of food with a special day connecting with where our food comes from at Slide Ranch. Together we will prepare and enjoy a farm-to-table lunch including Slide Ranch turkey, cranberry-rhubarb sauce, cornbread made with cornmeal we grind ourselves, garden greens, and winter squash pie. We will also explore the food traditions of Native California in honor of the indigenous Coast Miwok people. In addition to harvesting, cooking and feasting, we will milk our goats, visit the chickens, ducks and turkeys and hike spectacular coastal trails.

Fall Family Campouts 2019

Slide Ranch's Family Campouts, at an amazing site overlooking the Pacfic, are fun for the whole family! Spend the day taking part in farm activities, making crafts, and exploring nature. In the evening, gather together for a potluck dinner and a cozy campfire before settling in to sleep under the stars.

Fall campouts begin at 10 am on Saturday and end by noon on Sunday. Participants must bring their own camping gear, including a tent and sleeping bags.

  • Halloween Family Campout
    Saturday, October 26–Sunday, October 27

This festive family campout, anticipating Halloween, is a celebration of community, art and wholesome treats. With a playful spirit we will explore the creative potential of a bounty of winter squash, of all shapes and sizes. We will get crafty with wool and make tasty tidbits to share for trick-or-treating around the farm. Bring costumes / festive adornments. Dinner, treats, breakfast and Sunday brunch will be provided.
  • Dia de los Muertos Family Campout
    Saturday, November 2–Sunday, November 3

This family campout is a celebration of community and, in honor of Dia de los Muertos, a time to show thanks to our ancestors and the people who have historical connections to this land. We will create a flower-bedecked ofrenda or altar, share food stories, explore Bone Grove, paint our faces, make pan de muerto and garden noodle soup. We invite you to bring a memento of someone you are grateful for.

Toddler Day

During this sensory-rich Friday morning, your young children will discover textures, tastes and smells, and observe the wonders of nature! Enjoy milking a goat, holding a warm, freshly-laid chicken egg, and hearing the baa of our sheep, as we use all of our senses to explore the farm and garden and take part in simple, hands-on cooking and crafting.
