Family Concert at the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition

Renaissance faire musiciansEvery two years UC Berkeley presents the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition, a week-long celebration of early music featuring renowned musicians from around the world. Early music, if you're not familiar with the term, refers to music from the middle ages through approximately the end of the 18th century, played on instruments of the period and using period performance practice. While much of this may not be all that interesting to kids, they usually present at least one family friendly concert. This Saturday, June 7, Piffaro, The Renaissance Band presents Pied-Pipers of the Renaissance: A Colorful Tour of Instruments and Music. Piffaro, which hails from Philadelphia, will take listerners on a musical trip through the 15th and 16th centuries using a wide variety of instruments that you probably never heard of, including crumhorns (pictured), sackbuts, and shawms, as well as the more familiar recorders, bagpipes, guitars, lutes, and harp. Tickets are $18 for adults and half price for children 16 and under. Saturday's performance begins at 11 am at UC Berkeley's Herz Hall (on the south side of campus).
