Make a Patriotic Windsock for the 4th of July

Get your home ready for Independence Day with this easy-to-make patriotic craft that uses recycled materials and things that you probably have on hand in your craft drawer.

These American-flag windsocks look great hanging outdoors on the front porch or in the back yard, where they can sway and roll in the wind, and even inside the house. Make a few with different color and design variations.

I really like the way this craft turned out. It’s now one of my family’s 4th of July favorites!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A cylindrical oatmeal box or cardboard orange juice can (the can makes a smaller windsock)
  • Red, white, and blue construction paper
  • Star stickers (or cut them out of construction paper)
  • Red, white, and blue ribbon or crepe paper
  • Yarn or string
  • Glue or double-stick tape
  • Scissors
  • A hole punch

Here’s how to make it:

Cut the bottom off a cylindrical oatmeal box to make a tube. Cover the tube with construction paper and then decorate with star stickers or glue on stars cut from construction paper.

Cut ribbon or crepe paper into streamers approximately 24 inches in length. Glue or tape the streamers to one end of the windsock.

Punch four holes, each 90 degrees from each other, along the top of the opposite edge of the windsock. Cut two pieces of yarn each approximately 12 inches in length. Tie the yarn to the windsock through the holes. You’ll want to tie each end to holes on the opposite sides of the windsock. The two pieces of yarn or string will cross over each other.

Tie a longer piece of yarn to the smaller pieces already tied to the windsock. You'll use this piece of yarn to hang the windsock, so make sure it has plenty of length.

You’re done! Now go and hang your patriotic 4th of July windsock from your window, front porch, or deck. I hope you have a fantastic 4th with your family this year!
