February Classes and Programs at Parents Place Marin

infant yawningParents Place in San Rafael has been a valuable resource for countless Marin County parents and families. This winter, they offer a wide variety of programs, from childbirth education to classes for parents and children. Here are a few of the programs they offer in February, including classes for both infant-and-child and adult-and-teen CPR and a kindergarten preparedness webinar.

Infant and Child CPR

Learn to recognize an infant or child in distress, rescue measures for choking, CPR techniques, and infant sleep safety. Includes hands-on practice with mannequins. One-year certification provided. Pre-crawling babies welcome. Please come 10 minutes early! JAMaROO Music Time, plus bonus free play! (9 months–4 years)

JAMaROO Music Time is a fun-packed, 40-minute class that combines music, creative movement, and storytelling. Children will sing, play simple instruments, read stories, balance bean bags, and dance with streamers to a variety of music from around the world. Class themes are related to nature and the outside world. Parental supervision required. As a bonus, the playroom will be available for free play from 10:10 am until 11:30 am after each session. Boys and Discipline (2–10 years)

Boys’ activity levels often require different disciplinary approaches. This interactive class will explore problem-solving strategies that will help you communicate clear limits and love to your son. Infant Gourmet 101: Making Fresh, Easy, and Tasty Food for Your Little One (0–12 months)

Moms and dads, looking for ways to avoid battles over meals as your little ones grow up? Here’s a great way to introduce them to fresh, healthful—and, yes, tasty!—foods that will set them on a course for good nutrition for the rest of their lives. Infant Sleep Solutions (birth–12 months)

Learn some great techniques to help your little one—and you!—sleep. We will discuss baby sleep needs and the best ways to help young ones learn good sleep habits. We will cover the importance of a baby schedule, challenges to baby sleep habits (developmental milestones), new SIDS research and guidelines, pros and cons of various sleep methods (Ferber, CIO, low/no-cry methods), infant/child sleep products, and choices: family bed, crib, and room sharing. Webinar: Supporting You Child’s Transition to Kindergarten

Learn all about what to expect from kindergarten and what teachers will expect of you and your child. Is That Me Yelling? (all ages)

Want to have more harmony at home and less yelling? Most parents agree that yelling isn’t beneficial, but many report that they just don’t know what to do when their children misbehave. Learn to create a plan—and more—to address the issues that trigger yelling. One recent participant shared, “Rona’s class goes beyond the standard suggestions of deep breaths and removing yourself from the room. She helped me think about the negative thought patterns I get caught in that fuel my yelling.” With Rona Renner, RN, expert parent educator, temperament counselor, and author of the new book, Is That Me Yelling? Adult and Teen CPR

This class teaches rescuer skills in CPR and relief of choking (foreign-body airway obstruction) for adults and teens. It presents information about the American Heart Association's adult Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking in adults. This class is suitable for all laypersons, especially family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death and those who want to learn rescue skills for loved ones. Infant Massage (pre-crawling babies 6 weeks and older)

Learn a fun, easy technique to improve connection with your baby while providing a healthful, stimulating, and calming experience. Massage helps babies relax, leading to better sleep and resolution of common infant digestive issues. Working parents find this a great way to “reconnect” with children after work, and it’s a great platform to build a lifelong ability to communicate with children and help them feel strong and comfortable in their bodies.
