Tips from Photographer Cristin More on How to Dress Your Family for Your Newborn Photoshoot

Marin Mommies presents a sponsored article from Cristin More Photography.

As a Marin newborn photographer, I’m often asked  “What should we wear?”, so I’m here with my top tips for newborn photoshoot outfits for the whole family!

  1. Dress authentically to you. The goal of my newborn shoots is to beautifully document your life. If you wouldn’t be caught dead in a dress in real life, do not get tempted by all the gowns you see on Instagram. I’m not saying to not make it a little more elevated for your photos, but don’t go so far that you don’t recognize yourself.

  1. Keep it soft and simple. I aim to give timeless newborn photos that won’t feel dated in a year or even ten. To achieve that look and feel I always recommend simple tops or dresses for newborn photos in soft, neutral colors. The baby will be close to your body the entire time and any bright  colors can cast shadows and colors on the baby’s face.
  2. Get comfy. Every photographer is different, but in my sessions your baby is going to be in your arms most of the time, and if you have older kids, they are going to be cuddling up, too. Make sure whatever clothes you choose are comfortable and don’t have to be adjusted if you move around.

  1. Know your kids. If you have older kids, pick outfits that they are going to like wearing. If they hate dresses, have them wear a cute romper. If they won’t keep a headband in their hair normally, they won’t in our shoot either. Indoors, you can also skip shoes, so no tight dress shoes here!  We want everyone to be happy during the shoot, and not be focused on their clothes.
  2. Add special touches. Since I recommend keeping outfits on the simpler side for newborns, I tell families to make their outfits special in other ways. Texture, layering, pattern, or accessories are great ways to make each  outfit feel unique without distracting from the overall peacefulness of the photos. You can also add color through swaddles or accessories if that’s your vibe.
