Creating Home at Filoli
Filoli's Creating Home experience features an all-new large-scale outdoor installation by California artist Jayson Fann in the estate's redwoods and Natural Lands. Inspired by the natural forms of bird nests, tree hollows, and other natural shelters found throughout the landscape, the sculptural installations of Creating Home invite guests to explore the estate in new ways while reflecting on ideas of home, habitat, and belonging.
Constructed from naturally found wood and organic materials, the outdoor installations draw from Fann’s lifelong connection to the landscape and his immersive approach to nest building as both sculpture and experience.
Building on the exhibit’s themes of shelter, storytelling, and connection, Filoli will offer a diverse slate of interactive experiences throughout the estate, including:
- Giant nest-like sculptures tucked throughout the redwoods inviting guests to wander, explore, and learn within the landscape
- Immersive room vignettes “frozen in time” inside the historic house, highlighting the stories of the historic staff who shaped Filoli into a home
- Invitations to interact throughout the house, like projected footsteps that teach visitors to waltz in the Ballroom, phones for listening in on imagined historic conversations, and a station for visitors to share their own family stories
- Storytelling signage across the Gardens and Natural Lands highlighting notable trees, wildlife, and the hidden ecosystems that call Filoli home
- Hands-on discovery spaces and nature-inspired retail displays centered around nests, homemaking, storytelling, and outdoor exploration
- Daily talks with Filoli staff, focused on the outdoor exhibit, local wildlife, and natural habitats
- Family-focused programming themed around Creating Home, offering fun, age-appropriate education on Filoli’s ecosystems.
With art interwoven through natural landscapes, historic storytelling, and hands-on discovery, Creating Home celebrates the many ways living beings build community, connection, and a sense of home. Designed for repeat discovery throughout the season, the experience invites guests of all ages to uncover new moments across the estate all summer long.
