Earth Day Family Fun at Home

Earth Day is this week, April 22. You won't be able to get out to a live event like a beach or park cleanup, but who says you can't celebrate in your own way at home? Here's our guide to virtual events and Earth Day activities you can do with the kids at home this week. Check back during the week as we'll be adding more activities and online events to this page.
Virtual Earth Day Celebrations
- Celebrate 50 years of Earth Day and 50 years of Slide Ranch LIVE tomorrow, April 22. There will be special activities you can enjoy from the comfort of your home. Tune in on Instragram for live videos and YouTube for video releases throughout the day.
- Join the Exploratorium on Wednesday, April 22, from 1 to 2:30 pm to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Expore earth science in your own kitchen, learn about the science of social distancing, and more! You'll also find a variety of online Earth Day educational resources and experiments on their website.
- Celebrate Earth Day with the Bears at the Oakland Zoo. The zoo's Behind the Scenes Live educational streaming series (subscription required) features a special Earth Day episode all about the their bears and wildlife conservation.
- Children's entertainer Megan Schoenbohm offers live and interactive family music on Facebook and YouTube Monday through Thursday this week. In honor of Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, Megan will be singing songs to celebrate this magical place that we call home, while also brainstorming ways to take special care of our planet and community.
- Earth Day Jam with Charity and the JAMband on Wednesday, April 22 at 10–11 am. Donations are appreciated. Register for this class here.
- Music with Dani will be celebrating Earth Day by singing songs about the beautiful planet we live on. Join Dani on Facebook Live at 11:30 am on Wednesday, April 22.
- JAMercize Family Dance Party with Charity and the JAMband this Wednesday, April 22 at 5 pm. Rock it out with your kiddos half-way through the week! Special Earth-themed class this week! Donations are appreciated. Register online here.

Crafts
- Earth Day Coloring Contest. #NovatoFUNatHome is offering a Earth Day Coloring Contest. Draw a picture celebrating Earth Day 2020! In your picture, make sure you include: the Earth, at least 2 living things (ex. animal, person, plant) and lots of color. Deadline to turn in your Earth Day picture is April 22. Submit your Earth Day picture by posting a picture and tagging @novatofun, or sending us a direct message wit your picture. Pictures will be featured on their Instagram and Facebook.
- Paint Kindness Rocks. Go on a hike and collect some interesting rocks. Paint the rocks and add some special words of inspiration. You can also paint rocks for your garden (ie. tomatoes, lettuce...).
- Recycled egg carton ladybugs. Get a jump on the spring season with this ladybug craft made from a recycled egg carton. These ladybugs are adorable, easy to make, and of course environmentally friendly. Use colorful paints to brighten and make these cool ladybugs stand out.
- Make a Mini Terrarium. It's fun and easy to create your own world in a recycled glass container and decorate it with found materials. This project is great for all ages!
