BBQ Drumsticks with Brown-Sugar Sauce

My husband is my best critic in the kitchen - he loves bold flavors and raved about this sauce. We used Trader Joe's organic ketchup which doesn't include any high fructose corn syrup--I think it made all the difference.

1 cup ketchup
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbs cider vinegar
3 pounds chicken legs
salt and pepper to taste

  1. Get your barbecue ready, so that it heats up while you prepare the barbecue sauce.
  2. In a bowl, combine ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire and cider vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper.
  4. Spray your grill with a bit of canola oil spray before putting the chicken on.
  5. Put the chicken on the grill, skin side down. Cook for approximately 10-12 minutes, checking occasionally to be sure there aren't flare-ups from the fat in the skin.
  6. Turn the chicken and cook on the other side for an additional 10-12 minutes. Near the end of the cooking time on the second side, baste the chicken with your sauce. Cook for a few additional minutes, being careful not to let the sugar in the sauce burn.
  7. Turn the chicken again and baste the second side.
  8. Serve with extra sauce on the side for dipping
