Marin & Bay Area Earth Day Family Happenings!
Earth Day 2025 takes place on Tuesday, April 22. Families will find plenty of ways to observe the occasion here in Marin and the Bay Area, and we've created a list of local Earth Day events, crafts, hands-on fun or ways to celebrate nature and the planet.
- Free Entry to Muir Woods
Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley
Saturday, April 19, 8 am–7 pm
What better way to observe Earth Day than to visit the amazing Muir Woods? In honor of National Parks Week, which just happens to coincide with Earth Day weekend, admission to Muir Woods will be free on Saturday, April 20. Sonoma Garden Park
April 19, 10 am–1 pm
Celebrate Earth Day at Sonoma Garden Park with Sonoma Ecology Center! Volunteers of all ages can join from 10-11:30 am for garden care and maintenance. Afterward, enjoy an afternoon of creativity with tie-dyeing, nature crafts, and a fun egg hunt at 12:30 pm. Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco

Yerba Buena Gardens celebrates Earth Day! This event is a day-long, family-friendly celebration to learn more about the environment and the importance of sustainability. Featuring live performances at the Stage on the Great Lawn. Festivities include a Green Business Expo, tree planting, chalk art, ice art at the Yerba Buena Ice Skating and Bowling Center, carousel rides with Children’s Creativity Museum, giveaways and more! Get ready to be transported to a world of wonder at the 42nd Annual Butter & Egg Days Parade in Petaluma! This year’s theme “Petaluma’s Wonderland" - Where Imagination Blooms, invites participants and spectators to celebrate the magic and charm of our historic town. The parade takes place at 12 pm and the Festival offers a wide variety of festival foods, crafts, arts, two large “kid areas,” and much more all spread over four city blocks. San Francisco Botanical Garden

Join us for a fun filled celebration of Earth Day in the Great Meadow at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the garden or walk over to our Children’s Garden. This event is free with admission to the garden. We’ll be removing graffiti, polishing up parking meters and sidewalk fixtures, pulling spring weeds, beautifying the intersections, and removing every little scrap of litter to help make Downtown match the beautiful merchants and other business owners who make San Rafael such a wonderful place to live. Join SF Bike for a family-friendly bike ride through Golden Gate Park and SF’s newest park on the Great Highway on Sunday April 27 at 10am for an Earth Day Celebration.This ride is hosted in collaboration with the San Francisco Zoo and we will end the ride at their annual Earth Fest.The ride will begin at the Dutch Windmill, next to the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden and will be a flat ride that is almost entirely car-free. This year's family-friendly Earth Day celebration will kick off at Zelinsky Park with live music and fun hands-on activities. Create your own unique 'Pledge for the Planet' with Tiburon's Heritage & Arts Commission to assemble among others in the community. A lively non-motorized parade will commence at 11 a.m. along Tiburon Boulevard downtown to the Angel Island Ferry Deck where local environmentally minded groups like the Marine Mammal Center, Green Team, Richardson Bay Regional Agency, Belvedere-Tiburon Library, and more will be providing exciting ways to learn how to protect our planet. - Get outdoors and appreciate the amazing surroundings and views on one of our 6 spectacular spring wildflower hikes.
Crafts
- Earth Day experiments with the Exploratorium. Explore the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans this Earth Day with free, hands-on, teacher-tested activities that use everyday materials and real data sets.
- Paint Kindness Rocks. Go on a hike and collect some interesting rocks. Paint the rocks and add some special words of inspiration. You can also paint rocks as garden markers (i.e. tomatoes, lettuce…).
- Recycled egg carton ladybugs. Get a jump on the spring season with this ladybug craft made from a recycled egg carton. These ladybugs are adorable, easy to make, and of course environmentally friendly. Use colorful paints to brighten and make these cool ladybugs stand out.
- Make a Mini Terrarium. It's fun and easy to create your own world in a recycled glass container and decorate it with found materials. This project is great for all ages!
