Authentic Montessori Education: Five Things You Need to Know!

Marin Mommies presents a sponsored article from Montessori de Terra Linda.

Classrooms are multi-age, beautiful, and bustling
Children learn by doing. Students work with hands-on materials designed to make abstract concepts tangible and real. The classroom environment is carefully curated and busy with purposeful engagement.

Subject areas are interdisciplinary
The adult world isn’t divided into subject areas, nor is a child’s developing mind. Unlike a lockstep curriculum, children choose their own work, have opportunities to dive deep into areas of interest and work at their own pace.

Knowledge is decentralized
The teacher is not the sole source of information. When a young child needs help, the teacher might guide them to another student, which fosters both a collaborative community and a resourceful child.

Social-emotional learning is part of the DNA of the school culture
Primary and Elementary classrooms span three years—the younger children learning from their peers, the older children mentoring others, each child gaining valuable life skills and empathy from time spent as the youngest, middle, and oldest in the class. SEL is more than an add-on program. Mutual respect is at the core of our classroom culture.

Education is not centered around testing
Success is not measured with grades and tests. While there is a place for standardized testing, we hold our students to different standards for success, and our teachers to more meaningful ways of measuring the skills that matter most.
