Shabbat Chai Saturday Mornings at Sherith Israel Are a Lively Celebration for the Entire Family

Shabbat Chai Congregation Sherith IsraelTake a break from your busy schedule and join together with other families a few Saturday mornings a year at Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco. Known as Shabbat “Chai” (meaning “life” in Hebrew), theses Saturday mornings take the traditional Shabbat service and turn it into a lively celebration filled with activities, elective classes, a family-friendly service, and a potluck lunch.

Sherith Israel started Shabbat Chai two years ago to encourage families to participate in Shabbat morning services together with rich and meaningful Jewish experiences. The three days a year that it’s held are in lieu of Sunday school that week. The next Shabbat Chai takes place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Shabbat Chai starts with an hour of learning for children with their regular congregation teachers, while parents choose from a variety of electives—yoga, Torah study, creating 6 word memoirs, conversations on Jewish identity, and a range of other offerings. After, families come together for a music-filled and joyful service led by Rabbi Julie Saxe-Taller and Lior Ben-hur, followed by additional classes and programs for students while parents continue the service. They all then come back together for the potluck lunch.

Congregation Sherith Israel is located in San Francisco at 2266 California Street. For more information, call (415) 346-1720 or visit www.sherithisrael.org.
