Start Your Fall Veggie Garden with the Kiddos

Vegetable starts at garden center

It's time to plant your fall veggie garden! Kids love to help out and get their hands dirty planting seeds and vegetable starts and, better yet, will usually eat the things they grow. It's all a great chance to teach your kids about the importance of eating fresh vegetables.

We talked to Chris Untermann at the family-owned West End Nursery in San Rafael about the best veggies to plant for a fall garden. Now is the perfect time to get to start planning: "The best time to plant your vegetable starts is mid to late September. The key is to get them in while the weather is still warm, but not too warm that they bolt," Chris suggests.

For fall veggies, Chris recommends:

  • Broccoli
  • Lettuce
  • Swiss Chard
  • Peas
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Herbs
  • Bok Choy
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Carrots — Best by seed
  • Radishes — Best by seed
  • Onions
  • Collards

Get started this month and there's a good chance you'll have some amazing homegrown veggies for your Thanksgiving feast! Plant starts are arriving now at West End Nursery or your local garden center. Gardening has been a super popular activity during the COVID-19 pandemic so make sure you call and check to make sure they have what you want.
