Get Your Kids Involved in the Kitchen

A great way to have fun and learn at the same time is to get your kids involved in the kitchen. Whether by taking a cooking class or working at home with an easy, kid-friendly recipe, it's a great way for children to find out about nutrition and expand their culinary horizons. Life is more than just peanut butter sandwiches! Our four-year-old, Trevor, has been getting involved in the kitchen with both me and his father for a while now. For the past couple of years he's done the lion's share of making birthday cakes for family (from a mix... he's not that good), pancakes, and various other easy-to make dishes. For right now we parents handle the parts involving knives, burners, and ovens, but he has great fun measuring, stirring, sifting, mixing, watching things bake through the oven window, and, of course, eating his handiwork!

To make things more fun, I ordered him his own set of kitchen tools in the form of the Sassafras Little Cook Tool Kit, a collection of perfectly kid-sized tools packed in their own storage sack. The kit contains measuring spoons and cups, a wooden spoon, spatula, rolling pin, wire whisk, scooper, and more. With his own tools that are far easier for him to use than the adult-sized ones we already have, he feels like he's getting even more involved in the preparation and cooking process. Sassafras produces a selection of pretty neat functional cooking stuff for kids, including a the Sassafras Little Cook Kit, with a kid-size chef's hat, apron, and potholders, as well as kits for making cupcakes, pizza, and cookies.

Great idea!

My 2 year old son is already starting to help in the kitchen. He loves to help- he has even mastered cracking the eggs. It was a little messy in the beginning, but his technique has improved.
