5 Favorite Winter Family Hikes in Marin and Beyond

Believe it or not, winter is one of the best times to get outdoors and explore in Marin and Sonoma County. With all the rain, the grass is green, wildflowers are beginning to make an appearance, and the views are spectacular. So bundle up and get out in nature this winter — you'll be happy you did!

Here are 5 of our favorite winter family hikes in Marin and the Bay Area:

1. McInnis Park Wetland Preserve, San Rafael

Take a hike along the wetlands adjacent to San Pablo Bay, where you'll see amazing views, plenty of birds, and the occasional otter. Start your adventure from the parking lot at the McInnis Park Golf Center in San Rafael. Learn more.

2. Tolay Lake Regional Park, Petaluma

Tolay Lake Regional park, site of the annual Tolay Fall Festival each October, is a great destination for a family outing, with picnic areas, miles of paths and trails, and even some friendly farm animals to visit. Explore the old farm buildings and take a hike on one of the many trails at the park. Learn more

3. The Bay Trail at the Hamilton Wetlands

The Bay Trail opened in the summer of 2014 in Novato's Hamilton Wetlands, and it's one of our favorite Marin spots for short hike or bike ride with the kids. With easy access from several points in the Hamilton neighborhood and stunning views, this is a great place for families to head outdoors for an active outing. Learn more.

Jack London State Historic Park Glen Ellen

4. Jack London State Historic Park, Glen Ellen

Located in the small Sonoma Valley town of Glen Ellen, Jack London State Historic Park is made up of land that was at one time the Beauty Ranch owned by renowned writer and adventurer Jack London , author of classic adventure tales like The Call of the Wild. It's always a must-visit destination for us in winter and early spring — the wildflowers are starting to bloom, the weather is cool and clear, and it's breathtakingly beautiful. Learn more.

5. Tomales Bay Trail

Tomales Bay Trailhead, off Highway 1 just north of Point Reyes Station, is a great place for an easy winter hike in West Marin. This trail here is perfect for families with children of all ages, and passes through the gently rolling hills at the southern end of Tomales Bay. Be prepared to take in some sweeping views, watch for local wildlife, and meet some friendly cows wandering the meadows.
